A 1913 gem stands before us, the Simons Building. This Detroit landmark has witnessed over a century of change along Woodward Avenue. Originally built for BF Goodrich Rubber, it was designed by the renowned architect Albert Kahn. For years, it was known as the Goodrich Building, a testament to its first occupant. Today, we know it as the Simons Building, thanks to renovations by Wayne State University in 1994. The university renamed the building after Leonard N. Simons. Imagine this building during Detroit’s boom years, bustling with the energy of the burgeoning auto industry. B.F. Goodrich was a major player, supplying tires and other rubber products. Then, picture it again in the mid-20th century, still a hub of activity, but perhaps showing signs of wear as the city’s fortunes shifted. By the late 20th century, the building may have seemed like a relic of a bygone era. But Wayne State University saw its potential. They invested in its future, breathing new life into these walls. The Simons Building stands today as a symbol of Detroit’s resilience. It’s a reminder that even in the face of challenges, history can be preserved and repurposed.
