Santa Monica’s story begins long before its official founding. The Tongva people were the original inhabitants. Their village of Comicranga thrived in this very area. One notable resident Victoria Reid the chief’s daughter was taken to Mission San Gabriel at the age of six.

Then came the Spanish explorers. Gaspar de Portolà’s party camped here in 1769. There are two stories about how Santa Monica got its name. One claims it honors Saint Monica whose feast day is May 4. Another suggests Juan Crespí named it after springs resembling Saint Monica’s tears.

In 1839 Rancho San Vicente y Santa Mónica was granted to the Sepúlveda family. Conflicts arose with neighbors over imprecise land boundaries. A small community of vaqueros and their families lived on the rancho.

After the American conquest of California in 1848 things changed drastically. The Los Angeles and Independence Railroad connected Santa Monica to Los Angeles in the 1870s. A wharf was built transforming Santa Monica into a bustling port. The first town hall a brick building is now part of a hostel. Santa Monica incorporated as a city in 1886.

Santa Monica’s transformation into a seaside resort began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tourist attractions like Palisades Park and the Santa Monica Pier drew visitors. The iconic Hotel Casa del Mar opened its doors adding to the allure.

The early 20th century saw a diverse population including a Japanese fishing village near the Long Wharf. The Douglas Aircraft Company established a plant here in 1922. Four Douglas planes even attempted the first aerial circumnavigation of the world from Santa Monica Airport.

The Great Depression hit hard but the Works Progress Administration helped build City Hall and other structures. During World War II Douglas Aircraft employed thousands. The RAND Corporation a prominent think tank also has its roots here.

Beach volleyball is thought to have been developed in Santa Monica in the 1920s by Duke Kahanamoku. Santa Monica’s vibrant culture is evident in its art galleries theaters and the annual Santa Monica Film Festival.

The Santa Monica Pier with its amusement park and the Looff Hippodrome carousel remains a beloved landmark. The Third Street Promenade a pedestrian shopping area is a popular destination.
