Slipping through time, we find ourselves in 859 CE. A determined woman named Maryam bint Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Fihri, sister of the equally impressive Fatima al-Fihri, sets about creating a new spiritual heart for the Andalusi community. This is the origin story of the Mosquée Al Andalous, right here in Casablanca. The Mosquée Al Andalous, nestled in the heart of Casablanca, whispers tales of a vibrant community. It became a haven for Andalusi refugees, who had fled Cordoba in 818 CE after a failed uprising. They sought solace and community in Fez, bringing with them their rich culture and architectural traditions. The original Mosquée Al Andalous was a modest structure. It consisted of a hypostyle hall with rows of horseshoe arches and a peaceful courtyard where a walnut tree provided shade. This mosque stood as a testament to the resilience and faith of the Andalusi people. Political intrigue soon enveloped the Mosquée Al Andalous. The mosque found itself caught in a power struggle between the Umayyads of Cordoba and the Fatimid Caliphate. In 933 CE, the Zenata governor of Fez, aligned with the Fatimids, declared the Mosquée Al Andalous the main mosque of the Andalusian Quarter. This move solidified the mosque’s importance within the community. The mosque’s minaret, still standing today, was erected in 956 CE. It was funded by Abd al-Rahman III, the Umayyad caliph in Cordoba. The minaret’s design, similar to that of the al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, showcased the architectural prowess of the time. The Mosquée Al Andalous’s minbar, a symbolic pulpit, also carries a fascinating story. Originally commissioned by the Fatimids in 980 CE, it was later modified by the Umayyads in 985 CE. This reflects the ongoing political tug-of-war between the two powers. The Almohad dynasty left its mark on the Mosquée Al Andalous in the early 13th century. Caliph Muhammad al-Nasir ordered a significant reconstruction and expansion of the mosque. This included the addition of a monumental northern gate, a fountain, and an apartment for the imam. The Almohads also restored the minbar. Instead of replacing it entirely, they respectfully preserved the existing structure, adding new decorative panels in their own Moorish style. Over the centuries, the Mosquée Al Andalous has undergone numerous restorations and embellishments. The Marinids repaired the structure and added a library. Later, Moulay Isma’il renovated the fountain in the courtyard. Each era has left its imprint on this enduring sanctuary. The Mosquée Al Andalous stands today as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of the Andalusi people. Their legacy is etched into every arch and tile. Their journey resonates within these hallowed walls. As you gaze at the mosque, remember the rich history it embodies.
