“What if these walls could talk?” they might whisper tales of transformation, of a school evolving from a humble beginning to a pillar of education in Northern Thailand. This is Dara Academy’s Museum.

Dara Academy stands as Chiang Mai’s oldest private school. It is also one of Thailand’s largest. The school’s story began with a vision. American missionaries Reverend Dr. Daniel and Mrs. Sophia McGilvary founded Dara Academy. They wanted to create the first girls’ school in Northern Thailand.

Imagine a time when boys were taught by monks. Girls had limited access to education. The McGilvarys sought to change that. Their mission was to provide girls with equal educational opportunities.

In 1875 Sophia McGilvary started teaching small classes in her home. These classes were for local Christian girls. By 1879 the classes had grown. The Chiang Mai Girls School was founded near the Nawarat Bridge. This site is now the Church of Christ in Thailand.

The school’s early success inspired other mission schools. They expanded throughout Northern Thailand in the 1890s. A royal consort, Princess Dara Ratsamee, became a prominent patron. She was the daughter of Chiang Mai’s seventh King. King Rama V honored Princess Dara by renaming the school “Pra Raj Chaya’s Girl’s School” in 1888.

The 1920s brought significant changes. Enrollment increased rapidly. Julia Hatch became the school director in 1921. She aligned Dara Academy’s curriculum with the Thai Ministry of Education. Dara’s students began testing alongside students from government schools. In 1923 the Matayom department became known as “Dara Academy”. It relocated to the school’s current location. This move accommodated the growing number of students. The original classroom now serves as the school library.

Dara Academy received formal accreditation in 1940. The school temporarily closed during World War II. By 1947 Dara Academy expanded again. It began teaching upper Matayom courses at the present site.

The school has been honored with royal visits over the years. King Rama VII visited in 1925. King Rama IX visited in 1958.

Today Dara Academy is a coeducational school. It serves approximately 6000 students. These students range from Anuban to Matayom levels.

Dara Academy continues to uphold its school vision. It provides learners with an education that enhances morality and ethics. The school exposes students to essential life skills. It also inspires pride in Thai culture. The school increases awareness of the environment.

Dara Academy’s curriculum vision focuses on developing students with good morals and strong ethics. The school encourages life-long learning. Dara Academy promotes respect for Thai culture. It encourages students to conserve the environment. The school encourages each student to study to their full potential. Subjects include Thai English mathematics and information technology.

So as you explore Dara Academy’s Museum consider its long history. Think about its commitment to education. Remember its role in shaping generations of students in Northern Thailand. Dara Academy is more than just a school. It is a legacy.
