Established in 1931 Leuzinger High School stands proudly in Lawndale California. Its history is deeply intertwined with the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. The school became known as the Olympians. It was even granted authorization to use the Olympic name and rings. Leuzinger provided facilities for Olympic competitors. These included a shooting range and a bowling alley. A women’s gym with an Olympic-size swimming pool was added later. Sadly earthquake damage and safety regulations led to its removal.

Leuzinger High wasn’t always known for academic achievements. For many years it was considered a typical inner-city school. It was primarily recognized for its impressive athletic program. Many famous athletes graduated from Leuzinger. These include NBA MVP Russell Westbrook and NFL player Marvcus Patton. Kei Kamara another notable alum played professional soccer. Even rapper Kurupt attended the school briefly.

But the school’s story is more than just athletics. Leuzinger High has shown significant academic growth in recent years. This is largely attributed to its dedicated faculty and administration. Principal Dr Karma Nicolis leads the school. She is supported by associate principals Rosalyn Varee and Jose Varela.

The school’s main building designed by noted architect T C Kistner dates back to 1930. It underwent renovations in 1955 reflecting the postwar expansion of the campus. Other buildings like the 1937 girls’ gym showcase different architectural styles. The distinctive finger buildings built between 1948 and 1956 were unfortunately demolished in 2011.

Today Leuzinger High School continues its legacy. It serves as a community hub. Its alumni demonstrate the school’s diverse contributions to society. The school’s commitment to academics and athletics is strong. It strives to provide a well-rounded education for its students.
