The cornerstone. A simple yet powerful symbol. It speaks of beginnings. Of foundations laid. This very building before you Congregation Young Israel Talmud Torah of Flatbush stands on such a foundation.

Congregation Young Israel Talmud Torah of Flatbush is more than just a synagogue. It’s a testament to faith. It’s a beacon of community. It’s a living history book in brick and mortar.

In 1921 a congregation formed. Young Israel of Flatbush. They worshipped in the Ashkenazi rite. A beautiful Moorish Revival-style building rose between 1925 and 1929. Polychromatic brick. Horseshoe arches. Minarets. Intricate polychromatic tiles adorned the structure. It was one of the earliest and largest branches of the National Council of Young Israel. A movement that insisted on a rabbi for each branch. Though this wasn’t strictly enforced back then.

Rabbi Solomon Sharfman led the congregation for many years. From 1938 to 1984. He shaped the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. His legacy is woven into the very fabric of this place.

In 2010 this magnificent structure was recognized for its historical significance. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. A well-deserved honor.

Then in 2021 a merger occurred. A joining of two strong entities. Young Israel of Flatbush and Talmud Torah of Flatbush. This created Congregation Young Israel Talmud Torah of Flatbush. Now jointly affiliated with the National Council of Young Israel and the Orthodox Union. Services are now held at the former Talmud Torah synagogue. Located at 1305 Coney Island Avenue. Rabbi Kenneth Auman the spiritual leader guides the merged congregation.

Look at the building. Picture the generations of worshippers. Hear the echoes of prayers and teachings. Smell the faint scent of incense from countless services. The legacy of faith continues. The community thrives. Congregation Young Israel Talmud Torah of Flatbush stands strong. A vibrant hub of Jewish life. A testament to perseverance and unity. A place where history and faith intertwine.
