Did you know that Casablanca boasts a mosque so grand it once held the title of the world’s tallest minaret? The Hassan II Mosque stands as a testament to Moroccan artistry and King Hassan II’s vision. It is a landmark that dominates the city’s skyline.

Let’s explore the story of this magnificent structure. The Hassan II Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of Morocco’s rich heritage and modern ambitions.

King Hassan II envisioned a landmark that would make Casablanca proud. He wanted a mosque built on the water because God’s throne is on the water according to him. The faithful could then contemplate God’s sky and ocean while praying.

Construction began on July 12, 1986. It was an immense undertaking. Over seven years, thousands of artists and craftsmen poured their skills into the project. During the peak of construction 1,400 men worked during the day. Another 1,100 labored through the night. The Hassan II Mosque was finally completed and inaugurated on August 30, 1993. It was dedicated to the Sovereign of Morocco.

Financing such a grand project was a challenge. King Hassan II wanted a mosque second in size only to the one at Mecca. Public subscription played a crucial role. Twelve million people donated. Even the smallest contribution helped realize the dream.

The Hassan II Mosque undeniably reflects modernized ancestral art. It showcases innovations driven by technology and aesthetics. The mosque is 200 metres long and 100 metres wide. Materials came from all over Morocco. Some white granite columns and chandeliers came from Italy.

Inside the Hassan II Mosque, 6,000 Moroccan artisans worked for five years. They created mosaics, stone floors, and sculpted plaster. Carved wood ceilings added to the beauty. The mosque can accommodate 25,000 worshippers inside. Another 80,000 can gather in the plaza.

The prayer hall is a sight to behold. Its elaborate decorations showcase Moroccan craftsmanship. Cedar from the Middle Atlas Mountains was used for wood carving. Marble came from Agadir and granite from Tafraoute.

The Hassan II Mosque’s roof is retractable. It illuminates the hall with sunlight. On clear nights, worshippers can pray under the stars. This roof weighs 1,100 tons. It can open in just five minutes.

Once the tallest in the world, the minaret soars to 210 metres. A laser beam at the top points towards Mecca. It has a range of 30 kilometres. The minaret enhances the visual appeal of the boulevard.

The Hassan II Mosque Museum displays Moroccan arts. It also features architectural elements from the mosque. Carved stucco, painted wood, and zellij walls are among the exhibits.

Even after its completion, the Hassan II Mosque faced challenges. Saltwater from the Atlantic caused structural deterioration. Restoration work began in 2005. Stainless steel and high-grade concrete were used to enhance the building’s life.

The Hassan II Mosque stands as a symbol of faith, artistry, and innovation. Its story reflects Morocco’s past and future.
