Picture a bustling beach resort. Imagine Pleasure Bay in its prime. This wasn’t just any bay. It was a vibrant hub of activity. A place where families flocked. A place where laughter echoed across the waters. This was Pleasure Bay Boston.

Right here in this spot once stood the Head House. Built in 1897 it was more than just a building. It was a testament to architectural innovation. It showcased a unique Tudor style. The architect Edmund Marsh Wheelwright drew inspiration from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was a showstopper.

The Head House was a beachside paradise. It boasted ice cream shops. It had restaurants bathhouses. There were even retiring rooms and cabanas. Across the bay sat Castle Island. The Head House’s popularity soared. Summer crowds reached 200000 daily. This created parking nightmares even then few owned cars. People took the Bay View Trolley for five cents. They brought picnics. Their families came along. Many also visited the South Boston Aquarium nearby.

The Head House’s glory days were tragically short-lived. The Great Depression hit hard. Then the devastating Hurricane of 1938 struck. The Head House suffered major damage. A fire in 1942 sealed its fate. The building was demolished. It was deemed beyond repair. In its place a path was created. It connects Pleasure Bay to Castle Island.

Today Pleasure Bay is a quieter place. Yet its past echoes here. The memories of the Head House linger. It reminds us of a bygone era of seaside revelry. The Bay View Trolley and the Head House are gone. However the spirit of Pleasure Bay remains. It’s a reminder that even lost beauties leave their mark. They remind us of Boston’s rich history. A story of growth and resilience.
