Opened in 1982, the Word of Light Christian Center, formerly known as Second Christian Church, stands as a testament to faith and community. Originally located at Second Street and Lafayette Railroad, the church’s journey began in 1866 as the Christian Mission Church. The small congregation, led by Brother D. Orr, thrived under the guidance of their first permanent pastor, Dr. Rufus Conrad, a multifaceted leader who served not only as a preacher but also as a teacher and medical doctor. The church navigated through its early years, sometimes lacking consistent pastoral leadership yet relying on dedicated lay preachers to guide its 50 to 100 members. The church changed locations several times, from Fifth and Illinois Street to Fourth and Howard Street. In 1898, a young Butler University student, Rev. Henry L. Herod, took the helm. He elevated the worship services, instilled a sense of formality, and nurtured the church’s growth in education, finances, and spirituality. Rev. Herod also championed the preservation of Negro Spirituals, showcasing their beauty and significance with a choir of 500 adults and 40 children. In 1943, Rev. Robert Hayes Peoples ushered in a new era, emphasizing community involvement, religious education, and a structured organization. The church’s membership swelled, exceeding 800 by 1966. Rev. Peoples fostered unity through initiatives like “Brotherhood Sunday,” where pastors and choirs exchanged pulpits with white congregations. In 1969, Pastor T. Garrott Benjamin Jr. took the reins, preaching a message of “Under New Management.” The 1970s witnessed remarkable growth, with the church expanding its community programs and staff. Pastor Benjamin championed youth programs, authored books like “Boys to Men” and “The Home Alone Syndrome,” and emphasized the importance of Black fathers as role models. By 1980, Second Christian Church was recognized as the largest and fastest-growing Disciples of Christ congregation globally. The church relocated to 5640 E. 38th Street in 1982, boasting a 1,500-seat sanctuary equipped for a television ministry. The church’s name changed to Light of the World Christian Church in 1984, reflecting its expanding reach. The television ministry debuted in 1986, eventually broadcasting nationally on BET and TBN, reaching millions. Today, the Word of Light Christian Center continues its mission of community service and spiritual growth.
