Do you know why this unassuming spot on Great Marlborough Street carries such a powerful story? This is where the Red Plaque: Little Ireland stands. It marks the location of what was once Manchester’s most infamous slum.

Little Ireland existed from about 1827 to 1847. It was a four-acre district inhabited by poor Irish immigrants. These people sought a new life in Manchester. They came here fleeing poverty and famine.

The area south of Oxford Road railway station became known as Little Ireland. It was enclosed by the railway line and the River Medlock. Over time Little Ireland gained a reputation. It became known as the archetypal Irish district in nineteenth-century industrial cities.

Houses that were initially intended for the middle class were repurposed. These became multi-occupation dwellings for industrial workers. Cellars were rented out as cheap accommodation. This led to damp conditions that allowed infectious diseases to thrive.

The Great Irish Famine brought a surge in the Irish population in Manchester. Many Irish families crowded into Little Ireland. In 1841 the area had a population of only 1510. The small streets were full. James Leigh Street and William Street were over 75% Irish.

The Manchester South Junction Railway line led to the demolition of Little Ireland. Friedrich Engels described it as a horrid little slum. His book helped spread Little Ireland’s infamy. The area became known internationally. It was seen as the typical Irish district in industrial cities.

The Red Plaque: Little Ireland here serves as a reminder. It is here to remind us of the struggles of the Irish immigrants. They faced poverty and discrimination. They shaped Manchester’s history. The plaque was erected on January 1 1992. It marks a place of hardship and resilience. It shows how the community overcame adversity.

Though Little Ireland is gone its story remains. Its legacy of resilience remains etched in Manchester’s history. Let us take a moment to reflect. We need to reflect on the past. We should honor the memory of those who lived here.
