Gazing upon the Church of the Good Shepherd, one might sense the echoes of Hollywood’s golden age. The Church of the Good Shepherd stands as a silent witness to the glamorous lives and poignant moments of countless stars. This Mission Revival style church, nestled in Beverly Hills, opened its doors in 1925. It quickly became a spiritual haven for the burgeoning film community. The church’s location, at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Bedford Drive, placed it at the heart of the rising entertainment capital. The Church of the Good Shepherd wasn’t merely a place of worship. It became a stage for some of Hollywood’s most memorable events. In 1950, the church hosted the “Wedding of the Year,” uniting Elizabeth Taylor and Conrad Hilton Jr. Years later, Rod Stewart and Rachel Hunter also exchanged vows within its hallowed walls. Sadly, both marriages ended in divorce. The church has also witnessed somber occasions, serving as the final farewell for stars like Rudolph Valentino, Gary Cooper, Alfred Hitchcock, Danny Thomas, Eva Gabor, Frank Sinatra, and Zsa Zsa Gabor. Beyond the glitz and glamour, the Church of the Good Shepherd has a rich history. Initially, services were held in temporary locations, including the Windemere Apartments and the Beverly Hills Hotel. The church’s construction began in 1924, designed by J.J. Donnellan. It was completed a year later. In 1959, the church underwent renovations. Marble altars were installed, containing relics of Saints Felicitas and Perpetua, and St. Vibiana. Even a president graced the church’s pews. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy attended Mass. The Secret Service meticulously prepared for his visit, even installing a special phone for emergency calls from Washington D.C. The Church of the Good Shepherd remains an active parish, serving a vibrant community. It also houses the only Catholic school in Beverly Hills, the Good Shepherd Parish School, established in 1930. As you stand before the Church of the Good Shepherd, remember the stories whispered within its walls. The echoes of laughter, tears, and prayers. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, history, and the enduring allure of Hollywood.
