Torraccia Airfield, San Marino’s sole aviation facility, stands as a testament to the tiny republic’s ambition. The original runway, a mere strip of grass, was extended to its current length of 650 meters in 2012. This expansion, while a boon for the Aeroclub San Marino, stirred controversy among local residents wary of further development. Picture this: Pope Benedict XVI, landing on Torraccia’s helipad in 2011 during a pastoral visit. Or the Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force’s aerobatic team, soaring over the Sammarinese landscape during their annual flights for disabled children. Torraccia, a small village with a population just around 150, bears the name of a bygone era. “Torraccia” speaks of a time when a Lombard watchtower crowned Montelupo, a hill now marked by a small church. The tower, a symbol of protection and vigilance, still graces the coat of arms of Domagnano. The airfield, operated by Aeroclub San Marino, is a hub of activity. With around 100 members, the Aeroclub oversees flight schools, recreational flights, and the occasional tourist excursion. During the summer months, the airfield buzzes with activity, welcoming ten to fifteen planes daily.
