Deep within the heart of Saint Petersburg, ЦНИИ «Электроприбор» stands as a testament to Russia’s enduring pursuit of scientific advancement. ЦНИИ «Электроприбор», the Central Scientific Research Institute “Elektropribor,” began its life not as a research giant, but as an unfinished building on Malaya Posadskaya street. Intended for the Military Topographic Department of the General Staff Main Office, fate had other plans. In 1927, this very structure was repurposed and completed, becoming the home of the Plant of Electrical Metering Devices “Elektropribor.” Just a year later, the Soviet government recognized the burgeoning need for naval technology. They entrusted Elektropribor with a pivotal role, designating it as the main developer of ship artillery fire control devices. This marked a significant turning point for ЦНИИ «Электроприбор», setting it on a course to become a leader in navigation, gyroscopy, and electronic systems. From these early days, innovation flowed. The institute delivered its first fire control devices to naval onshore batteries. Then, they pioneered anti-aircraft fire control devices and guidance systems for searchlights. ЦНИИ «Электроприбор» didn’t just develop technology; it nurtured minds. Vocational schools were established to train skilled workers, and a dedicated department was opened at the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute. The institute became a cradle of ingenuity, driven by brilliant minds like N. N. Ostryakov, S. F. Farmakovskiy, and V. I. Kuznetsov. They spearheaded the creation of the country’s first gyroscopic devices, including the gyrocompass Kurs and the vertical gyro Shar. These groundbreaking inventions quickly found their way onto warships, revolutionizing naval navigation. The institute’s contributions extended beyond naval applications. In the realm of space exploration, ЦНИИ «Электроприбор» developed the high-precision orientation system Kvant for telescopes on Earth remote sensing spacecraft. Even during World War II, while partly evacuated, the institute continued its essential work, launching production for the front lines and ensuring the repair of vital equipment. Throughout its history, ЦНИИ «Электроприбор» has consistently pushed the boundaries of scientific exploration. They have developed groundbreaking inertial navigation systems for submarines, including the Sila-N, which guided the first Soviet nuclear submarine to the North Pole, and the Simfoniya, designed for strategic missile nuclear submarines. Their contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Order of October Revolution. The institute’s legacy extends to numerous scientific publications and conferences. The periodic scientific and production bulletin “Priborostroeniye,” now the Gyroscopy and Navigation journal, and conferences like the Conference of Young Scientists, highlight their commitment to knowledge sharing. Today, ЦНИИ «Электроприбор» stands as a symbol of Russia’s scientific prowess, a place where innovation continues to shape the future.
