Bangbae-dong

Nestled at the foot of Mount Myeon-ri, Bangbae-dong unfolds. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with modern life and whispers of the past. Bangbae-dong translates to “dong-ri with my back to Mt. Myeon-ri”. This name perfectly captures its unique geographical location in Seoul’s Seocho District. Until the close of the Joseon Dynasty, Bangbae-dong was known as Bangbae-ri. It was part of Sangbuk-myeon in Gwacheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do. Then, in 1914 during the Japanese colonial period, it became Bangbae-ri within Sindong-myeon, Siheung-gun, Gyeonggi-do. A significant shift occurred in 1963. The Seoul Metropolitan Government expanded its boundaries. Bangbae-dong became part of Seoul, marking a new chapter in its history. Today, Bangbae-dong is a vibrant neighborhood. It thrives at the western edge of Seocho District. It’s strategically positioned at the crossroads of the Seoul-Gwacheon road and the southern circulatory road leading to Umyeon Mountain. This location makes it a key transit point. Bangbae-dong is more than just a single entity. It’s a collective of five distinct dongs. These include Bangbaebon-dong, Bangbae 1-dong, 2-dong, 3-dong, and 4-dong. Each dong contributes to the rich tapestry of the greater Bangbae-dong area. This area boasts a population exceeding 120,000 residents, creating a bustling community. Bangbae-dong isn’t just a residential area. It’s an educational hub. It houses several schools, including Dongdeok Women’s Middle School, Suhmoon Girls’ Middle School, and Isu Middle School. For younger students, there’s Bangbae Elementary School, Banghyeon Elementary School, Bangil Elementary School, Isu Elementary School, and Seorae Elementary School. Bangbae-dong is well-connected to Seoul’s transportation network. It’s served by Bangbae Station, Sadang Station, Naebang Station, and Isu Station. These stations provide access to multiple subway lines, making it easy to explore the wider city.
