Pea Island

Was Pea Island always an island? That’s the question that hangs in the air here on this dynamic strip of land. Pea Island, part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, has a fascinating history of shifting sands and changing boundaries. It was formed, then rejoined with Hatteras Island, and separated again by the whims of nature. Inlets like New Inlet and Oregon Inlet, carved by powerful storms, have redrawn the map time and again. Imagine Pea Island’s existence as a constant push and pull between land and sea. Pea Island is more than just a shifting sandbar. It’s a place where history was made. This was home to the Pea Island Life-Saving Station. It was the first U.S. Coast Guard life-saving station with an all-African American crew. Led by the remarkable Richard Etheridge, these brave men faced prejudice and hardship. They performed their duties with exceptional skill and unwavering courage. In 1896, the schooner E.S. Newman found itself in dire straits during a hurricane. Captain, wife, and three-year-old son were all aboard, their lives hanging in the balance. The storm raged. Keeper Etheridge had suspended beach patrols, but surfman Theodore Meekins spotted a faint distress signal through the tempest. Against all odds, the Pea Island crew launched their rescue. They battled towering waves and treacherous currents. Nine times they plunged into the churning sea. Each time, they brought another soul back to safety, beginning with the captain’s young son. This heroic rescue became legendary. It cemented the Pea Island crew’s place in history. Pea Island is also a haven for wildlife. Since 1937, it’s been home to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Here, amidst the dunes and marshes, countless birds and other creatures find sanctuary.
