The Parc de la Ligue Arabe isn’t just a park. It’s a living testament to Casablanca’s history. It began its life in 1913. A French architect Albert Laprade designed it. It was then known as Parc Lyautey named for Hubert Lyautey the first French Resident General in Morocco. Lyautey a visionary leader understood the importance of green spaces. He saw them as essential for the wellbeing of the city’s inhabitants. He wanted a beautiful park that also supported the quality of life.
The park’s design reflects Laprade’s vision. Broad avenues lined with palm trees. Immaculately manicured lawns. Flowerbeds bursting with color. Shady groves provided respite from the Moroccan sun. Arches from the old Portuguese prison decorate the park. They serve as a support for a pergola.
The Parc de la Ligue Arabe has seen many changes. In the 1950s an amusement park Parc Yasmina opened within its boundaries. It eventually fell into disrepair. More significantly in 1956 after Morocco gained independence. The park was renamed Parc de la Ligue Arabe. This symbolized Morocco’s connection to the Arab world. It also highlighted the nation’s newfound independence and its embrace of modernity.
Recently the Parc de la Ligue Arabe underwent extensive renovations. This massive project cost an estimated 100 million Moroccan dirhams. The renovations revitalized the park’s recreational areas. They added a skate park. They also reunited the two halves of the park creating a more unified green space. A bobsleigh track was added for thrill-seekers. The renovations aimed to maintain the park’s historical significance while enhancing its appeal to modern visitors. The park was expected to open in September 2018 after renovations that started in March 2016.
Today the Parc de la Ligue Arabe remains a beloved spot. Families gather for picnics. Sports enthusiasts meet at dawn for their exercises. It’s a vibrant space that caters to people from all walks of life. It’s a testament to Casablanca’s growth. Its transformation from a small port into a major metropolis.
