The lane officially became Fish Lane in 1904. This was an honour bestowed upon George Fish a prominent local politician. George Fish also happened to run the Brisbane Steam Laundry a business located right on this very lane. He served on the South Brisbane Municipal Council for many years. His contributions earned him this lasting legacy. The name change marked a turning point but not the final chapter in Fish Lane’s story.
The lane wasn’t always a continuous thoroughfare. In 1924 it underwent a significant extension. The expansion linked Grey Street to Manning Street. It passed under the South Brisbane railway line. This project brought more businesses to Fish Lane. By 1931 it was upgraded to street status briefly becoming Fish Street. Its status changed. It then reverted to its lane status.
The story of Fish Lane is one of transformation and resilience. World Expo 88 in 1988 brought significant changes to South Brisbane. Many buildings were demolished. Almost all the service lanes disappeared. Yet Fish Lane survived. It’s a testament to its enduring significance. It stands as one of the few remaining connections to South Brisbane’s past.
Today Fish Lane is a bustling destination. The lane is alive with art murals sculptures and vibrant street life. It’s a far cry from its humble beginnings as Soda Water Lane. It’s a lively mix of restaurants cafes and bars. The transformation from a simple service lane to a cultural hub is remarkable. Walk along the lane and feel the pulse of its history.
