Dredged from swamp, born from hardship. The Maschsee Plaque stands before us. It marks more than just a lake. It tells a story of ingenuity. It also whispers of darker times.

The Maschsee Plaque reminds us of Hanover’s largest body of water. This artificial lake covers 78 hectares. That is about 190 acres. Imagine this area as a swamp.

Before the Maschsee, this area was a floodplain. The Leine River often flooded it. People considered creating a lake here in the late 19th century. The idea gained traction. It would control flooding. It would also put the land to better use.

However, it wasn’t until the Great Depression in the 1930s that the Maschsee project truly took off. The Nazi Party seized on it. They needed to reduce unemployment. The Maschsee became a symbol. It showed their supposed action and vigor.

On November 28, 1933, the city council approved the project. Work began on March 21, 1934. Conditions were harsh. Pay was low. Yet, 1,650 people labored to excavate the lake basin. They moved roughly 780,000 square meters of earth. That equals about 8.4 million square feet.

The Maschsee Plaque cannot tell the full story. The workers had few tools. Many brought their own. They used 14 locomotive trains and diggers. But much of the work was manual. They created the lake.

The official opening was on May 21, 1936. Hundreds of thousands watched. Nazi Party members marched. Athletes rallied. The Maschsee became a stage.

The Maschsee Plaque doesn’t mention the deception. During World War II, people covered the lake. Canvasses and fake landscapes hid it. This confused Allied bomber pilots during air raids.

The Maschsee Plaque also doesn’t mention art. Today, sculptures surround the lake. The 6-meter-high Hellebardier stands on the north side. Georg Kolbe’s Menschenpaar graces the east side.

The Maschsee is still here. It is a recreation area. People sail and row here. They jog and walk around it. In summer, the Maschsee Festival draws two million visitors. This event began in 1986. It marked the lake’s 50th anniversary.

The Maschsee Plaque is not just about the past. It’s a reminder of how a city can transform. It shows how a swamp became a lake. It also shows how a project for dark reasons became a place for leisure.

The water level drops about 1.3 centimeters per day. That is due to evaporation and seepage. A pump station in Ricklingen replenishes the water. It pumps 1 to 2 million cubic meters of water per year.

Remember the Maschsee Plaque. The past shapes the present. The Maschsee stands. It reflects Hanover’s story.
