In 1946 a new chapter unfolded on Altonaer Strasse. A garden school was established. It later became the location of the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences. This street holds a piece of Erfurt’s post-war history. It witnessed the rise of this important institution.

Altonaer Strasse is located in the Hanseviertel district of Erfurt. This area’s history is intertwined with that of the street itself. The Hanseviertel was developed starting in 1880. It features Gründerzeit architecture reflecting the era’s building styles. World War I interrupted construction. The post-war era brought severe housing shortages. This prompted the city to build municipal housing.

Architects Karl Schneider and Otto Jacobsen from Hamburg were brought in. They had experience with modern municipal housing projects. Jacobsen became a partner in the Krämpfertor GmbH. This company began building in the Hanseviertel in 1928. The Flensburger Block and Hamburger Block were architectural highlights. These four-story buildings exemplify Bauhaus-style design. The Hamburger Block notably featured Erfurt’s first outdoor stairwell design.

Construction continued after the war. It extended eastward towards Greifswalder Strasse. The University of Applied Sciences significantly shaped Altonaer Strasse’s character. Its presence brought students and revitalized the area. The university continued to expand. Post-reunification renovations and expansions further altered the area’s landscape.

Today Altonaer Strasse thrives. It’s a blend of history and modern development. You see the past in the older buildings. You see the present in the university campus. It’s a street where history and education meet. A street that has witnessed significant changes. It stands as a testament to Erfurt’s resilience and growth. The Altonaer Strasse isn’t just a street. It’s a living history lesson in Erfurt’s past. It tells a tale of recovery and renewal. A street that carries the weight of history and the promise of the future.
