“Play it again Sam” A familiar tune drifts from within. Rick’s Cafe Casablanca beckons.

This isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a meticulously recreated film set. A tribute to the legendary 1942 movie Casablanca. Opened in March 2004 it transports you back to the golden age of Hollywood. Kathy Kriger a former American diplomat dreamt it up. She wanted to capture the magic of the film. She succeeded.

The building itself is a beautiful 1930s Moroccan mansion. A grand riad with a central courtyard. Two palm trees stand guard at the entrance. The heavy wooden doors mirror those iconic ones on screen. Inside the atmosphere is intoxicating. The design is faithful to the film. Curved arches sculpted bars and balconies create a sense of timelessness. Beaded and stencilled brass lighting adds a touch of glamour. The lush greenery casts dancing shadows on the white walls. An authentic 1930s Pleyel piano sits proudly in its spot. “As Time Goes By” is a frequent request.

More than just a movie set the cafe showcases Moroccan craftsmanship. Intricate tile work adorns fireplaces and staircases. Walls are covered in muted tadelakt. Floors are made of handmade terra cotta tiles. The food pays homage to Morocco’s rich culinary heritage. Seafood is plentiful. You’ll find traditional dishes like sole meuniere alongside modern creations. Steaks foie gras and even an American Crab Louie are on the menu. Rick’s cheesecake and brownies are sweet ending options.

Nightly Issam Chabaa fills the air with the sounds of the 1940s and 50s. His repertoire includes French Spanish Brazilian and American standards. Sunday nights are dedicated to jazz improvisation sessions. Local and visiting musicians join in. It’s a lively affair. Between sets a curated soundtrack of big band sounds sets the mood.

Rick’s Cafe Casablanca is more than a restaurant. It’s an experience. A journey back in time to the romance and intrigue of old Hollywood. It’s a place where history and legend meet. So come in and enjoy the show. You might just find yourself humming along to that unforgettable melody.
