St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy

Deep within the heart of Downey, California, stands St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy. This institution whispers tales of two schools merging into one, a story of resilience and transformation. St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy, or PMA as it’s known locally, isn’t just a school. It’s a testament to the enduring power of education and community. Originally, the campus housed Pius X High School, a co-ed institution founded in 1953. The school embraced innovation, even experimenting with a “non-graded” system where students were placed based on achievement, not age. However, declining enrollment led to financial challenges, prompting fundraisers and a renewed focus on alumni relations. Meanwhile, St. Matthias High School, an all-girls school founded in 1960 in Huntington Park, had its own rich history. In the mid-90s, the Archdiocese decided to merge Pius X and St. Matthias. The Pius X program was phased out, and the campus became St. Matthias High School for Girls. This transition wasn’t without its challenges. Students, parents, and teachers from both schools voiced their concerns. Years later, in 2011, a study by Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Catholic Education led to another transformation. St. Matthias transitioned back to a co-ed model, becoming St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy, honoring both legacies. Today, St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy serves around 400 students from diverse backgrounds. The school, with its crimson and gray colors, embodies both penance and the vibrant lifeblood of Christ’s sacrifice. The Warrior mascot symbolizes the strength and courage needed to face life’s challenges. The school’s motto, “Pride-Virtue-Purpose,” reflects its commitment to holistic education, preparing students for college, career, and life. Recent renovations, including a new athletic field and classroom upgrades, demonstrate the ongoing investment in the future of PMA. The school continues to build on its dual legacies, fostering a community where pride, virtue, and purpose guide students on their educational journey.
