Here, where the Pearl River Delta embraces the future, stands a testament to human ingenuity: the Heshuikou Bridge. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a vital component of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is a colossal bridge-tunnel system. It connects the bustling city of Shenzhen to Zhongshan.

Imagine a project so ambitious, it earns ten world records. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link boasts the world’s longest span fully offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. Its main span stretches an incredible 1,666 meters. Think of the height. The bridge deck soars 91 meters high. This gives it the highest navigation clearance for any sea bridge.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link includes a 6.7 km tunnel on the Shenzhen side. It also features 19 bridges. Their aggregate length totals 43 km. The longest continuous bridge section covers about 22.5 km. Around 15.5 km of this stretches above the sea. The entire link has four lanes in each direction. Vehicles can travel at a maximum speed of 100 km/h.

Before the Heshuikou Bridge was built, Shenzhen sought inclusion in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. However, the government chose a single-Y design, leaving Shenzhen out. The idea for a separate link connecting Shenzhen and Zhongshan emerged in 2008. It faced delays. Concerns arose about jeopardizing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge’s success. Finally, it was included in Guangdong’s 12th five-year plan.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link opened to traffic on June 30, 2024. It drastically cut travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan. Journeys that once took two hours now take less than 30 minutes.

However, initial days saw congestion. Some drivers faced hours of delays. Some even detoured via the Humen Bridge. Despite these initial hiccups, the bridge is a resounding success. In its first month, over 3 million vehicles crossed the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. The link integrates bridges, islands, tunnels, and underwater communications. Its undersea tunnel is 6,845 meters long. The immersed tube section reaches 5,035 meters. It consists of 32 tube sections and one final joint. It is the world’s longest and widest steel-cased concrete immersed tube tunnel.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link uses advanced protective coatings. Hempel provided these coatings. They ensure long-lasting aesthetics. They also provide superior corrosion protection. The project set special technical standards. These standards ensure safety, high quality, durability, and sustainability.

As you stand here near the Heshuikou Bridge, remember the vision. Remember the engineering marvel that connects not just two cities. It connects dreams and possibilities across the Pearl River Delta, facilitating efficient flow of resources and driving high-quality development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
