“Red, why red?” you might ask. The Red Bridge before you stands as a testament to Saint Petersburg’s colorful past.

This single-span bridge stretches across the Moika River. It forms a vital part of Gorokhovaya Street. The Red Bridge is 42 meters long and 16.8 meters wide.

Let’s delve into its history. The first cast iron bridge here was built between 1808 and 1813. William Heste designed it. In 1953, architect V.V. Blazhevich rebuilt the bridge. The original cast iron was replaced with welded steel arches. However, most of the decorations were kept intact.

The Red Bridge got its name from a 19th-century tradition. Bridges crossing the Moika River were color-coded. The Red Bridge was named for the color of its sides facing the river.

Today, only four colored bridges survive. These are the Blue Bridge, Green Bridge, Yellow Bridge, and Red Bridge. Three have their original names. The Yellow Bridge is now Pevchesky Bridge.

Imagine Saint Petersburg in the 1800s. The colors helped people navigate the city. “Meet me at the Red Bridge,” they might say. This simple name was easier than describing the architecture.

The Red Bridge has seen many changes. It has been rebuilt and renamed. Yet, it remains a vibrant part of Saint Petersburg. It reminds us of the city’s history and beauty.

As you cross the Red Bridge, think about its story. Think about the people who have crossed it before. Consider the colorful history of Saint Petersburg. The Red Bridge is more than just a crossing. It is a symbol of the city itself.
