On a crisp autumn day in 1837, a hush fell over the bustling village of Bridesburg as a newly erected sanctuary, the First Presbyterian Church of Bridesburg, opened its doors. This wasn’t just any church. It was a beacon of faith, built on the dreams and determination of a community yearning for a spiritual home.

The First Presbyterian Church of Bridesburg, you see, emerged from humble beginnings. In 1829, a small group started gathering in homes, their shared faith overcoming the muddy roads and long journey to the nearest church in Frankford. The faithful of Bridesburg, led by visionaries like Alfred Jenks, a prominent textile businessman, decided to build their own sanctuary. Jenks even donated a plot of land for the church. Their initial meetings, fueled by hope and determination, blossomed into a Sunday School held at Jenks’ own residence.

The church we stand before today, however, wasn’t the original structure. That first church, built in 1837, was replaced in 1867 thanks to the generosity of Barton Jenks, son of Alfred. This new First Presbyterian Church of Bridesburg, built with stone and adorned with stained-glass windows, was modeled after an Italian church. Its towering steeple became a defining feature of the Bridesburg skyline.

The legacy of the First Presbyterian Church of Bridesburg, however, extends far beyond its beautiful architecture. In 1952, a tradition was born here that would touch the lives of countless children around the world. Reverend Clyde Allison, newly installed as pastor, launched the very first Trick or Treat for UNICEF event. Imagine children dressed in costumes representing different cultures, their little hands clutching glass mason jars, not for sweets, but for donations to help those less fortunate. This tradition, a testament to the First Presbyterian Church of Bridesburg’s enduring commitment to compassion and outreach, continued for an incredible 65 years.

Though the First Presbyterian Church of Bridesburg closed its doors in 2017, its story serves as a reminder that even in the face of change, the spirit of faith and community can leave an indelible mark on the world.
