Hidden in plain sight on the Street of the Knights stands the Church of St. Trinity, a silent sentinel whispering tales of a turbulent past. This church, my friends, has worn many hats, its stones bearing witness to the ebb and flow of empires. Originally built between 1365 and 1374, the Church of St. Trinity was initially dedicated to St. Michael. The Knights Hospitaller, who were once the protectors of Rhodes, built this church in the name of the Catholic faith. Look closely above the entrance and you’ll spot the coat of arms of the Holy See, flanked by the royal insignia of England. These emblems hint at the church’s origins as a project of the English Langue, a branch within the Knights Hospitaller. But the whispers of history tell a different story after the Ottomans conquered Rhodes. The Church of St. Trinity was transformed into a mosque known as Khan Zade Mesjid. This is when the church acquired its distinctive elliptical dome, a mark left by the Ottomans on this holy structure. Today, the Church of St. Trinity stands silent, its doors closed to the public. Yet, even in its stillness, it speaks volumes. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and a silent chronicle of Rhodes’s rich and layered past.
