In a twist of history, Dunwich, once a place of quarantine and asylum, has become a gateway to an island paradise. Dunwich, nestled on the western shores of North Stradbroke Island, has borne witness to the ebb and flow of time and the resilience of the human spirit. Before European arrival, the Quandamooka people thrived here for thousands of years, calling this part of the island Goompee or Coompee, meaning “pearl oyster.” It was a place of bountiful resources and deep connection to the land and sea.

Dunwich’s European chapter began in the early 19th century. A convict outstation and a military depot marked the first attempts at settlement. The island’s strategic location and natural beauty couldn’t be ignored. However, tragedy struck in 1850 when the immigrant ship “Emigrant” arrived at Dunwich, carrying typhus. The site was quickly converted into Moreton Bay Quarantine Station, but the disease spread rapidly. Fifty-six souls perished, finding their final resting place in Dunwich Cemetery, a somber reminder of this dark period.

Despite the tragedy, Dunwich persisted. It later housed a benevolent asylum, a refuge for the less fortunate. Echoes of these bygone eras can still be felt in the air, a poignant reminder of the island’s layered past. Today, Dunwich serves as the arrival point for those seeking solace in the natural wonders of North Stradbroke Island. The ferry from Cleveland delivers visitors to Dunwich, a gateway to pristine beaches, freshwater lakes, and ancient rainforests. As you step ashore, take a moment. Breathe in the salty air, feel the sand beneath your feet, and let the stories of Dunwich wash over you, stories of hardship, resilience, and the enduring allure of this island haven.
