In 1959, a beacon of modernism arose in Denver. Architect Eugene Sternberg designed Temple Micah. He envisioned two triangular wings, symbolizing solidity and equilibrium for the Reform Jewish congregation. Temple Micah’s story began in the mid-1950s. Members of Denver’s Jewish community sought a more flexible approach to their faith. They yearned for inclusivity and acceptance. This small group laid the foundation for the vibrant community that is Temple Micah today. The congregation initially held services at the Barnes School of Commerce. They officially incorporated in 1956 as the Denver Congregation for Reform Judaism. In 1957, they adopted the name Temple Micah, inspired by the biblical prophet. By 1961, they dedicated their new sanctuary on South Monaco Parkway. Sternberg’s architectural vision brought their values to life. Temple Micah thrived as a place of multi-faceted participation. It offered a space for children’s education, adult learning, and quiet reflection. It echoed with music, joy, and celebrations. The Rocky Mountain backdrop enhanced the spirit of community. Sadly, by 1978, membership dwindled. The congregation made the difficult decision to sell the building to Mount Gilead Baptist Church. The spirit of Temple Micah endured, even as they moved to share spaces with Park Hill Congregational Church. Today, Temple Micah thrives in a new location on East Montview Boulevard. It continues to welcome individuals from all walks of life, embracing the principles upon which it was founded.
