The Église Slovaque Saint-Cyrille et Méthode became a vital part of their lives. It was a place of worship a community center. A place where they could maintain their culture and traditions. It was a lifeline.

The first mass was held in a chapel. Later it moved to a church building on Chenneville Street. It even had its first community hall there. The Église Slovaque Saint-Cyrille et Méthode became an independent parish in 1944. A Slovak school opened in 1928 teaching Slovak children their language and culture.

Several priests served the Église Slovaque Saint-Cyrille et Méthode. Msgr Wincent Helenowski a Polish priest established the parish. Fr Urban Koval a Slovak-speaking Franciscan took over organizational work. Fr Roman Ondečko served for nearly 24 years. He witnessed significant demographic changes. The parish’s character shifted becoming more Canadian. The use of the Slovak language declined.

In 1989 when Slovakia gained independence the church renewed its ties to its homeland. A new priest Rev Gabriel Juruš arrived. He was the first pastor fully educated in Slovakia.
