Born from a 1971 vision Evans Hall stands as a testament to human ingenuity. Its imposing concrete structure initially housed the beating heart of the early internet. From within its walls the original vi text editor was born. Berkeley Unix BSD and the legendary game Rogue all saw the light of day there. Evans Hall cradled the creation of Ingres and Postgres the ancestors of many database systems we use today.
The TCP/IP protocol stack the backbone of our modern internet was developed in Evans Hall’s Berkeley sockets library in 1981. This building was a hive of innovation. The ubiquitous Sendmail email program was written there. Evans Hall also housed a world-leading computer architecture group in the 1980s. There Professors David Patterson and Randy Katz pioneered Reduced Instruction Set Computing RISC. Their work inspired the ARM architecture found in almost all cell phones. The RAID Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks architecture also originated within these walls.
Evans Hall’s legacy extends beyond computers. Professor William Kahan developed the IEEE 754 floating-point architecture standard used in every processor. Professor John Ousterhout created Tcl the first system-independent scripting language influencing Python JavaScript and many others. Even the popular programming textbook Oh Pascal was written by a professor with an office here.
Despite its contributions Evans Hall isn’t without controversy. Its design drew criticism. It was deemed one of the ugliest buildings on campus. Its windowless classrooms fueled complaints. The building obstructed the view of San Francisco Bay. Students even painted murals to protest its aesthetics. The building’s poor seismic rating led to plans for demolition and replacement. The high cost of seismic retrofitting sealed its fate.
Rumors and legends surround Evans Hall. The building’s height and poor safety record led to a tragic series of student suicides. A persistent false rumor claimed the Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski taught here. This is impossible he left Berkeley before construction began.
