This faculty, a cornerstone of the university’s Campus de la Salud in the Zaragocilla neighborhood, has been shaping the future of pharmaceutical sciences in Colombia since its inception. The Facultad de Química Farmacéutica wasn’t always here. Its journey began in 1941, nestled within the Faculty of Medicine. It was a small school then, with a vision to train professionals who could not only prepare medicinal formulations but also delve into the exciting world of drug discovery. Imagine a time before this modern building existed. The year is 1943, and the first classes of what would become the Facultad de Química Farmacéutica are held in a quinta along Avenida 20 de Julio. Ten eager students embarked on this pioneering program, led by Dean Celso Solano Salcedo, a graduate of the University of Chile. By 1946, four of those original ten students emerged as fully qualified Químicos Farmacéuticos, ready to contribute to the burgeoning pharmaceutical industry that was taking root in Barranquilla. This growth wasn’t accidental. Barranquilla, in the 1940s, was a hub of commerce and industry. Numerous pharmaceutical laboratories sprang up, creating a demand for professionals like those graduating from the nascent Facultad de Química Farmacéutica. The faculty’s creation was a direct response to this need, fueled by the desire for qualified professionals who could ensure the quality of locally produced pharmaceuticals. The Facultad de Química Farmacéutica has continuously evolved. In 1950, it gained full faculty status, no longer a mere school under medicine’s wing. Later, in 1989, it moved to the present Campus de la Salud. This relocation marked a new era of expansion, fostering research and broader academic pursuits. Today, the Facultad de Química Farmacéutica stands as a testament to its rich history. It offers a rigorous undergraduate program in Químico Farmacéutica, shaping future pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. Moreover, it is home to several postgraduate programs, including master’s degrees in pharmaceutical sciences and environmental sciences, even a doctorate in environmental toxicology. The faculty’s commitment extends beyond academia, reaching into the community through projects in areas like community pharmacy, applied research, and environmental impact.
