Consider the journey of an Italian Jesuit priest to South India centuries ago. That man now stands before us as the Veeramamunivar Statue. This statue commemorates Constantine Joseph Beschi. He is better known by his Tamil name, Veeramamunivar.

Veeramamunivar was born in Italy in 1680. He arrived in India in 1710, eager to contribute to the Jesuit mission in Madurai. Inspired by the work in China, he adopted the lifestyle of the Tamil people. He donned saffron robes like an Indian ascetic.

He mastered Tamil, Sanskrit, and Telugu. Because of his courage in defending his beliefs, he earned the nickname Dhairiyanathar. This means “The Fearless Guru.”

Veeramamunivar’s contributions to Tamil literature are immense. He compiled the first Tamil lexicon, a Tamil-Latin dictionary. Also he created Chaturakarati. It is a comprehensive quadruple lexicon. This included words, synonyms, categories, and rhymes.

He translated the Thirukkural into Latin. This introduced European intellectuals to the beauty of Tamil literature. He also translated other Tamil works into European languages. These works include Devaaram, Thiruppugazh, Nannool and Aaththichoodi.

Veeramamunivar even reformed the Tamil script. He introduced the system of dotting consonants. This is the புள்ளி we see above எழுத்துக்கள் today. Before him, lines indicated long vowels.

His biggest poetic work is Thembavani. It contains 3615 stanzas. It tells the story of salvation and the life of Saint Joseph. The Academy of Poets approved it as a classic. Veeramamunivar received the title “The Courageous Ascetic.”

He also wrote Paramarthaguruvin Kadhai. It is a satirical piece about a naive religious teacher. His prose works include religious books and writings against Lutheran missionaries.

In 1968, the state of Tamil Nadu erected this Veeramamunivar Statue. It was a recognition of his contribution to Tamil language and literature. A tablet in his birthplace calls him the Dante of the Tamil language. The fifth World Tamil Congress also erected a statue of him in Madras.

Veeramamunivar’s legacy is a testament to his love for Tamil. He showed that language can bridge cultures. He proved that dedication to a cause can transcend borders. He lived as a Tamilian in spirit. His story will be celebrated by Tamilians with pride for generations.
