SENA – Sede Cuatro Vientos is more than just a training center. It is a place where dreams take flight. These skills prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the modern workforce.
In 2010, SENA invested four thousand 500 million pesos in this modern facility. It is located on Avenida Pedro de Heredia in the Cuatro Vientos sector. The center can train up to three thousand students. This expansion was a direct response to Cartagena’s growing need for skilled labor. It supported major projects such as the Refinería de Cartagena expansion.
Interestingly, the construction of this very campus involved SENA’s own students. About 150 apprentices from various trades contributed to the project. These trades include construction, electrical maintenance, plumbing, and even typography. This hands-on experience was invaluable. It allowed them to apply their classroom learning in a real-world setting. Neufal Coronel from the electricity department noted that it was a way of rewarding SENA for the training they received.
Olga Lucía Quintero Ocampo, the sub-director at the time, emphasized the modern technology. She also talked about the comfortable learning environments. These reflect the reality of the city’s industrial vocation. The new campus boasts a multi-technology space. This promotes project-based learning. It allows students from different specialties to collaborate. They can combine their skills for productive initiatives.
However, the path has not always been smooth. In 2023, students took to the streets in protest. They voiced concerns about infrastructure issues. These include water leaks, deteriorated furniture, and humidity. They demanded better conditions. They also called for the removal of the regional director, Jaime Torrado Casadiegos.
Jhon Barrios, from the public employees’ union Sindesena, highlighted the ongoing infrastructure problems. Despite significant investments, the issues persisted. In February 2024, a fire broke out at the Centro Internacional Náutico, Fluvial y Portuario. This incident raised further concerns about safety and maintenance. Irina Feria, president of Sindesena in Bolívar, pointed out the lack of attention to maintenance.
