Consider this: a statue that has been replicated countless times. It has been admired for centuries. We are standing before one such copy of the Venus de’ Medici.

The Venus de’ Medici is not just any statue. It represents the Greek goddess Aphrodite. This depiction captures a fleeting moment. She seems surprised as she emerges from the sea. The dolphin at her feet reinforces this idea. It wasn’t needed to support the bronze original.

This marble sculpture stands 1.53 meters tall. It is a Hellenistic marble copy from the 1st century BC. It possibly originated in Athens. The original was a Greek bronze sculpture. It followed the Aphrodite of Knidos type. A sculptor in the Praxitelean tradition likely created it.

The statue’s base once bore a Greek inscription. It claimed Kleomenes, son of Apollodoros of Athens, made it. However this inscription is not original.

Many copies of the Venus de’ Medici exist. Louis XIV owned five marble versions. They were crafted by renowned sculptors. Lead copies graced English and European gardens. Small bronze versions were popular collector’s items. The Venus de’ Medici was even reproduced in Sèvres biscuit porcelain.

The Venus de’ Medici has become a cultural touchstone. References to it trace changes in taste and classical scholarship. It resides in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The statue was nearly lost to the French. It was shipped to Palermo to escape Napoleon. It eventually returned to Florence in 1815.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City also houses a close replica. Its dimensions and details closely match the Venus de’ Medici. The story of the Venus de’ Medici continues to evolve. It remains an iconic representation of beauty and art.
