Six meters tall in bronze he stands. This is the Vladimir Mayakovsky Statue. It is a powerful tribute to a great Russian poet. Let’s delve into the story behind this iconic monument.

The Vladimir Mayakovsky Statue stands in Triumfalnaya Square. This square was once known as Mayakovsky Square. The statue’s story began long before its unveiling in 1958. The foundation was laid in April 1940. However, construction was delayed by the Great Patriotic War.

After the war, a contest was held to design the monument. Sculptor Alexander Kibalnikov and architect Dmitry Chechulin won. Kibalnikov dedicated six years to creating the sculpture of Vladimir Mayakovsky. To find the perfect spot, a wooden model was moved around Mayakovsky Square.

Finally, on July 29, 1958, the Vladimir Mayakovsky Statue was unveiled. Writers, artists, scientists, and workers attended the ceremony. Lyudmila Mayakovskaya, the poet’s sister, was also present. Poet Nikolai Tikhonov opened the event. He spoke of Mayakovsky’s deep connection to his art and country. Other speakers included USSR Minister of Culture Nikolai Mikhailov and teacher Tatyana Zepalova. The ceremony ended with flowers laid at the statue’s base. The granite pedestal bears a line from Mayakovsky’s poem “Fine!”.

The Vladimir Mayakovsky Statue quickly became a popular meeting place. In the 1950s, fashionable people gathered here. Young poets recited their work in the 1960s. Hippies frequented the area in the 1970s. Rockers and punks took over in the 1980s and early 1990s. Today, street musicians perform here regularly. The Vladimir Mayakovsky Statue continues to be a vibrant spot.
