“This town,” an old-timer might begin, leaning back on his porch swing, “wasn’t always so big, you know.” He’d gesture with a weathered hand towards the bustling streets of Iowa Colony. “Back in my day,” he’d chuckle, “you could count the folks livin’ here on one hand.” Iowa Colony, nestled in Brazoria County, Texas, has a history as rich as the soil that first attracted settlers. Founded in 1908, the town was named for its founders’ home state – Iowa. G.I. Huffman and Robert Beard, transplants from the Hawkeye State, envisioned a thriving community. The town grew slowly at first, reaching a modest population of 27 by the mid-1960s. However, the discovery of oil in 1948 brought an economic boom to the region, and Iowa Colony began to grow. With the expansion of the Houston metropolitan area, the once sleepy town transformed into a bustling suburb. Today, Iowa Colony boasts a population of over 8,000 and continues to grow rapidly. While it’s no longer the small farming community of its early days, the spirit of its founders lives on. Iowa Colony stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the American West – a place where humble beginnings can blossom into something remarkable.
