大阪府立貿易専門学校 発祥の地 Stele

Amidst the bustling energy of Osaka, two unassuming stone monuments stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era. These markers commemorate the Osaka Prefectural College of Foreign Trade. The 大阪府立貿易専門学校 発祥の地 Stele, as it’s known, whispers tales of ambition, education, and the rise and fall of a unique institution. The college was established in 1948 as the Osaka Higher Foreign Trade Training Center. This was a time when Japan, still recovering from the war, desperately needed professionals skilled in international business. The college aimed to fill this void. It initially offered one-year programs, evolving into a two-year vocational school. It stood as the only public institution of its kind in Japan specializing in foreign trade. The college’s journey was one of transitions. It was renamed Osaka Prefectural College of Foreign Trade. It relocated several times, finally settling in the former grounds of Osaka Women’s University. Over five decades, this institution nurtured over 2,200 graduates, equipping them with the skills to navigate the complexities of global commerce. The college was also known as OCFT. The 大阪府立貿易専門学校 発祥の地 Stele stands near the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in front of the Mydome Osaka display building. It’s a poignant reminder of the college’s contribution to Osaka’s economic landscape. The college eventually closed its doors in 2004. This closure followed financial difficulties faced by the Osaka prefecture. Despite protests from students and stakeholders, the college’s mission ended. The stone stele, however, remains. It serves as a testament to the legacy of the Osaka Prefectural College of Foreign Trade. It embodies the spirit of a time when Osaka sought to reclaim its position on the world stage.
