Ready to explore a unique venue? This is the Palladium in Malmö. It stands as a testament to the city’s rich cultural history.

The Palladium first opened its doors in 1920. It quickly became a central hub for both theater and film. Gustaf Löfberg, originally planning a glass and porcelain factory, shifted gears. He embraced the trend of বায়োগ্রাফ theaters. August Stoltz, the future city architect, designed this building. Its interior drew inspiration from Stockholm’s Palladium.

Look around. Notice the decorations by August Unger from Berlin. Admire the monumental ceiling paintings by Edmund Stoltz. They depict “Antiquity”, “The Middle Ages”, “The Present”, and “The Fine Arts”. These paintings adorn the vaulted corridors with dark brown oak panels.

Originally, the Palladium boasted 1044 seats. These were split between the stalls and balcony. It included a royal box for 20 guests. Elegant side salons, an orchestra pit, and marble floors added to its grandeur. Large crystal chandeliers sparkled above a golden foyer. A genuine Persian carpet completed the scene. Alongside Scania, it was Malmö’s premier cinema.

In 1954, Sweden’s largest film screen was installed here. The Palladium then belonged to Svensk Filmindustri. Beyond films, the Palladium hosted concerts. Celebrated artists graced its stage. Laurel and Hardy, Jussi Björling, and Alice Babs all performed here. Theater companies from London also made guest appearances. Before 1944, the Malmö Symphony Orchestra played here. The Palladium served as a predecessor to the Malmö Concert Hall.

Carola Häggkvist famously broke through here in 1983. She sang “Främling” in the Melodifestivalen. In 2008, she celebrated her 25th anniversary as an artist here. The last film shown during its cinema era was Bille August’s “Jerusalem” in 1996. The বায়োগ্রাফ closed. It then hosted various theatrical guest performances.

In 2002, Region Skåne initiated a renovation. It transformed the Palladium into a modern dance and music scene. It now holds between 240 and 500 seats. The Palladium reopened on February 14, 2004. It became a stage for music and modern dance guest performances. Musik i Syd and Dansstationen manage the venue.

Dansstationen is one of Sweden’s largest independent stages for contemporary dance. It hosts both Swedish and international guest performances. Since moving to the Palladium in 2004, Dansstationen thrives here.

Each season, the Palladium presents a wide array of concerts and dance performances. These span various genres and cater to all ages. Sparkling chandeliers illuminate the events under beautifully arched vaults. Original paintings from 1920 add to the atmosphere. The Palladium hosts about 300 events each year. Conferences and corporate events also occur here.

The Palladium received Malmö City’s urban planning prize in 2004. This was for “Reconstruction and Renovation”. Its central location between Stortorget and Gustav Adolfs torg makes it accessible. Visitors come from all over Skåne and the Öresund region.

Today, the Palladium retains much of its original decor. Its intimate feel and unique acoustics are praised. The Palladium in Malmö continues to be a vibrant cultural hub.
