Welcome to Lycée Lyautey. It is a historic school with a place of choice and excellence in Casablanca. It extends far beyond. This French international school is the largest French educational establishment in the world.
Lycée Lyautey was named after Marshal Louis Hubert Gonzalve Lyautey. He was the first French resident general in Morocco. This was at the beginning of the French protectorate. His bust sits in the principal’s office. A portrait of him is painted on the wall of Building K. It dominates the Lycée Lyautey’s 8-hectare courtyard.
The school’s history began in 1919. Work started on the old Lycée Lyautey on Mers-Sultan Avenue. It was then called the Grand Lycée. The school was inaugurated in 1921. In 1929 the Petit Lycée opened on Rue d’Alger. It welcomed primary school classes. From 1933 it also included middle school classes.
At the end of the French protectorate the buildings were given to the Moroccan government. The Grand Lycée became the current Lycée Mohammed V. The Petit Lycée became the Ibn Toumart School.
Construction of the current Lycée Lyautey started in 1959. It was built on the site of the former Turpin military camp. The school opened in 1963. In 1965 the school expanded. It annexed the neighboring Beaulieu military camp. This camp already had sports facilities.
In 1970 Maurice Schumann visited Lycée Lyautey. He was the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He wrote in the guestbook. He paid homage to the teachers and principal. He called it the greatest school of a spiritual empire. This empire was the Francophonie.
Lycée Lyautey has many facilities. These include a documentation center. It has specialized magazines and novels. Students also have access to encyclopedias. There is a center for information and guidance. Counselors are available to help students. A health center is also available. It has nurses doctors and a psychologist. Students can eat in the school cafeteria.
The Lycée Lyautey also has great sports facilities. These are located at the Complexe Nawal el Moutawakel. There is a sports association. It allows students to play sports outside of school.
Many notable people attended Lycée Lyautey. These include Gad Elmaleh and Jean Reno. Fouad Laroui and Laïla Marrakchi also studied here.
