Whispers of history linger at Cadder. This unassuming district in Bishopbriggs holds secrets from centuries past. Right here on the route of the Forth and Clyde Canal stands Cadder a place where Roman legions once marched.

Cadder’s story begins long ago. A Roman fort stood here on the Antonine Wall. It was part of a chain of fortifications. Balmuildy to the west and Kirkintilloch to the east were its neighbours. Smaller fortlets existed at Wilderness Plantation and Glasgow Bridge. The Second Legion may have built the Cadder fort. Archaeologists John Clarke and Sir George Macdonald unearthed its remains in the 1930s. Sadly sand quarrying destroyed the site in the 1940s. A sketch of a medieval motte survives. A fascinating find was an oil lamp associated with the fort’s bath house.

Before the Reformation the lands of Cadder belonged to the Bishops of Glasgow. The Cadder kirk was also theirs. Later disputes arose. Wealthy landowner James Dunlop of Garnkirk clashed with Thomas Muir and the Cadder congregation. The conflict concerned the appointment of their minister. Cadder Parish Church a neat modern Gothic church in the 19th century replaced earlier structures. Generations of the Stirling family owned Cadder House.

Today Cadder is different. A large cemetery stands as a reminder of the past. Strathkelvin Retail Park and Low Moss Prison are modern additions. The area’s history though remains vivid. The Roman fort may be gone but its presence is felt in the very soil. The struggles over church appointments and land ownership echo through time. Cadder’s past lives on.

The name Cadder itself means Coille Dobhair in Scottish Gaelic. This tranquil location near the River Kelvin carries a powerful legacy. It is a place where ancient history and modern life intertwine. A place worth remembering.
