Why this imposing palace of industry, you ask? This grand structure before us is the Mannesmann-Haus, a testament to Dusseldorf’s powerful industrial past and a symbol of architectural innovation. The Mannesmann-Haus, designed by the renowned Peter Behrens, was completed in 1912 as the headquarters for the Mannesmannrxf6hren-Werke AG, a company known for its revolutionary seamless steel tubes.

The building itself, while echoing the grandeur of an Italian Renaissance palazzo, was remarkably ahead of its time. Behrens, a proponent of functionalism, believed an office building should be a flexible organism, adaptable to the ever-changing needs of a company. This belief is reflected in the Mannesmann-Haus’s design: a revolutionary iron skeleton structure supporting the building allowed for easily movable internal walls. This meant that rooms could be reconfigured endlessly, creating larger open spaces or smaller offices as needed- a stark contrast to the static buildings of the time.

Behrens’s commitment to functionality extended beyond the floorplan. He understood the importance of light for a productive workspace. Large windows, almost the entire height of each floor, bathe the interior in natural light, a feature rarely found in office buildings of that era. While the original furnishings were sadly lost in the aftermath of World War II, the building retains its elegant marble staircase, a subtle nod to luxury within its otherwise functional design.

The Mannesmann-Haus stands today as a monument to Dusseldorf’s industrial and architectural heritage. This grand building, once a hub for steel production, now houses the Haus der Geschichte Nordrhein-Westfalen, the museum for the history of North Rhine-Westphalia. It’s a fitting transformation, allowing this adaptable structure to continue serving the community, its story woven into the very fabric of Dusseldorf.
