Why is this section of Cartagena’s wall so robust and imposing? We are standing before Baluarte Santa Cruz, one of the city’s oldest defensive structures. Baluarte Santa Cruz, along with Baluarte Santo Domingo and Baluarte Santiago, formed the first line of defense for Cartagena. Their purpose? To protect the delicate strip of land connecting the city to Bocagrande, a prime target for invaders. Imagine standing here in the early 1600s. Governor Diego de Acuña, fearing another Drake situation (he wreaked havoc in 1586, you see), commissioned the construction of these bulwarks. The design, based on Bautista Antonelli’s 1595 plan, was entrusted to engineer Cristóbal de Roda. However, Baluarte Santa Cruz, despite its initial strength, suffered significant damage during the French attack of 1697. It was left to Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor to oversee its restoration in the early 1700s. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. In 1713 and 1714, storms battered the bastion, causing further collapses. Yet, the people of Cartagena persevered. They rebuilt the walls and added a counter-wall for good measure, incorporating three bomb-proof vaults: one as a gate and the others for storing gunpowder and supplies. The resilience of Baluarte Santa Cruz mirrors that of Cartagena itself – a city that, despite facing numerous challenges, has always risen from the ashes, stronger and more magnificent than before.
