Hidden within Chennai, the Selliyamman temple at Pillaipakkam whispers tales of ancient traditions. This temple, a blend of history and devotion, isn’t your typical grand temple structure. It’s constructed primarily of brick, a testament to its humble origins. The architecture doesn’t adhere to a specific style, showcasing a unique character. The temple consists of a rectangular sanctum sanctorum, an antarala, an ardha mandapam, and a Mukha mandapam. The adhisthanam, however, is built with stone, a subtle nod to traditional temple design. The sanctum sits atop this stone base, without the usual towering vimana. A small gopuram crowns the ardha mandapam, a simple yet elegant touch. Look closely at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. You’ll find dwarapalakis standing guard, accompanied by nagars. Inside, the Selliyamman temple holds a surprise. Here, Chamundi, with her fiery jwalamakuda, is worshipped as Selliamman. She’s not alone. The Saptamatrikas–Maheswari, Vaishnavi, Brahmi, Kaumari, Indrani, and Varahi–share the sanctum, a rare gathering of powerful goddesses. Before the sanctum, you’ll see the balipeedam, a simham, and a Trishul, adding to the temple’s spiritual atmosphere. The Selliyamman temple’s history is shrouded in mystery, dating back perhaps to the Pallava period, between the 8th and 9th centuries. The current structure is estimated to be 150 to 200 years old. An 879 CE inscription, mentioned in Nrupathungan’s book, refers to Kali Pidari as the guardian deity of Pillaipakkam, linking the temple to an even older tradition. The temple likely evolved from the practice of establishing Saptamatrika temples to protect villages from harm. Over time, the seven goddesses were often replaced by a single Amman deity, like Ellai Amman or Selliamman. The Selliyamman temple at Pillaipakkam stands as a unique blend of history, simple architecture, and powerful goddesses. It’s a reminder of ancient traditions and the enduring power of local deities.
