The Southeast Asia-Japan Cable spans about 8,900 km. It links several locations in Southeast Asia with Japan. Think of the Philippines, Brunei, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. They’re all connected. This cable ensures fast communication between these countries.
The SJC became operational on June 27, 2013. It was a big step for connectivity in Asia. The cable uses advanced technology. It has six fiber pairs. Its initial design could handle over 15 Tbit/s. That’s a lot of data. It can be upgraded to 23 Tbit/s.
Many companies worked together on this project. Globe Telecom, Google Inc., and KDDI were involved. Telkom Indonesia and Singapore Telecommunications also participated. China Telecom, TOT, China Mobile, and Chunghwa Telecom joined too. Brunei International Gateway was another partner.
The Southeast Asia-Japan Cable has landing points in several locations. Chikura in Japan is one. Chung Hom Kok in Hong Kong is another. You’ll also find landing points in Nasugbu in the Philippines. Shantou in China and Songkhla in Thailand are included. Telisai in Brunei and Tuas in Singapore complete the list.
The SJC cable uses advanced 40G SLTE tech. It also uses OADM Branching technologies. This makes it a state-of-the-art system. The project cost about US$400 million. NEC Corporation from Japan and TE SubCom handled the project.
