A majestic oak stands before you. This is the Podbielskieiche. It’s more than just a tree. It’s a silent witness to Berlin’s history.

The Podbielskieiche a monumental oak tree is named after Victor von Podbielski. He was a Prussian Minister of State. His son was General Eugen Anton Theophil von Podbielski. Victor served as a Prussian officer. He fought in the wars of 1864-1866 and 1870/71. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant General in 1896. He even held the position of State Secretary in the Imperial Post Office from 1897 to 1901. From 1901 to 1906 he was Prussian Minister of Agriculture.

In 1903 he entered the Reichstag as a conservative member. From 1909 onwards he was chairman of the Imperial Committee for the Olympic Games. These games were scheduled for 1916 in Berlin. World War I prevented them from taking place. Podbielski was a strong supporter of sports. He led the German team to the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. Berlin owes the Olympiastadion to his business acumen. It was built in 1917.

This mighty oak tree which stands near the main entrance of the Olympiastadion bears his name. Legend has it that he planted it himself.
