Beneath the warm Caribbean sun Las Bovedas stand proudly. They are a testament to Cartagena’s rich history. Originally built between 1792 and 1798 Las Bovedas served as munitions storage. The Spanish engineer Antonio de Arevalo designed this impressive structure. Its 47 arches and 23 vaults were the last Spanish colonial project within Cartagena’s walls.

Cartagena’s strategic location made it a vital port. It was a gateway to Latin America. This wealth attracted many enemies. The English repeatedly targeted the city. Las Bovedas played a key role in the city’s defenses.

During the Latin American wars of independence Las Bovedas became something darker. They transformed into dungeons. Prisoners often found themselves submerged in seawater. The vaults location near the Caribbean Sea made this a cruel punishment. Legend says they are bombproof.

Today Las Bovedas is a bustling marketplace. Gone are the days of war and imprisonment. Now tourists browse colorful souvenirs and Colombian handicrafts. You can climb to the top for a breathtaking view of the sparkling Caribbean. Las Bovedas offers a unique blend of history and vibrant commerce. It is a window into Cartagena’s past and present. A symbol of resilience and adaptation. A place where history whispers its secrets.
