In 1957, the State Education Commission approved the establishment of Guangdong Institute of Nationalities. Later, in 1961, it even moved to Hainan. The Cultural Revolution caused the campus to close. But the school reopened on April 25 1974. It returned to the Guangzhou campus in 1978.
The institution underwent several transformations. In 1998, it was renamed Guangdong Vocational Polytechnic Normal College. It then merged with Guangdong School of Mechanical Engineering. In 2002, it became Guangdong Polytechnic Normal College. Guangdong Economic Management Institute and Guangdong Finance and Trade Management Institute merged into it in 2005. Finally, in 2018, it was approved to become Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University. This is the name we know today.
