Once upon a time, banners weren’t just decorations. The Oratorio di santa Maria del Gonfalone tells their story. It stands near Via Giulia. The Oratorio is more than just a building. It holds centuries of history within its walls.
Let’s step back in time. The Archconfraternity of the Gonfalone needed a place. They chose this site near Via Giulia. The old Santa Lucia church was in ruins here. In the mid-sixteenth century, they built their oratory. It was dedicated to Maria Santissima Annunziata and the Apostles Peter and Paul.
But what is a Gonfalone? The term “banner” meant flag. In the 14th century, the Brotherhood used the Pope’s flag during processions. This reaffirmed its sovereignty over Rome. Imagine the scene. A colorful banner waving proudly.
Domenico Castelli renovated the Oratorio in the seventeenth century. He designed its facade. The facade resembles a simple church. But the real treasures are inside the Oratorio di santa Maria del Gonfalone.
Inside, twelve frescoes depict Stories of the Passion of Christ. The frescoes are by masters of Roman Mannerism. Livio Agresti painted the Empire of Christ in Jerusalem and the Last Supper. He also created the Journey to Calvary. Cesare Nebbia contributed the Oration in the Garden and the Coronation of Thorns. He also painted the Ecce Homo. Raffaellino da Reggio captured the Capture of Jesus. Federico Zuccari depicted the Flagellation. Daniele da Volterra created the Crucifixion and the Deposition of the Cross. Marco da Siena painted the Resurrection. Matteo da Lecce painted David. Each fresco tells a powerful story.
Look up. Admire the wooden ceiling. Ambrogio Bonazzini carved it. It depicts the Virgin and Saints Peter and Paul. The Oratorio di santa Maria del Gonfalone is a feast for the eyes.
The Oratorio’s history stretches back centuries. The Confraternity of the Gonfalone began in 1264. They were known as white penitents. They wore white gowns with blue hoods. They carried banners in religious processions. They also performed a yearly passion play.
The Oratorio was built between 1544 and 1547. It was built on the ruins of the old Santa Lucia Vecchia church. The church’s basement can still be seen.
By 1890, the Archconfraternity dissolved. Its property went to the state. In 1960, the Oratory was restored. It was then entrusted to the Roman Polyphonic Choir. Now, it serves as a concert venue.
The Oratorio del Gonfalone is a testament to art and faith. Its frescoes, ceiling, and history create a unique experience. The building has a modest facade. Inside lies a wealth of artistic treasures. The Oratorio di santa Maria del Gonfalone is called the Sistine Chapel of Mannerism.
