Remember when VfL Eintracht Hannover emerged? This club represents the fusion of two significant sports entities in Hanover. VfL Eintracht Hannover’s story begins with two distinct clubs. They are VfL Hannover and Eintracht Hannover. In 2013, these clubs decided to unite. The fusion created VfL Eintracht Hannover.
VfL Hannover has a rich history. It goes all the way back to 1848. It was known as Männer-Turnverein Hannover. Middle-class professionals founded it. Ernst Victor Schmorl and Alfred von Seefeld were among them. Students from the Higher Trade School also joined. The city supported the club. A sports field was created in Seelhorst around 1848/49. The MTV advocated for gymnastics. It also formed a firefighting group called “Rettungsschaar.” By 1851, the club had 560 members. The Turn-Klubb zu Hannover emerged from its ranks in 1858. From 1860, the club used the new city gym. It was located on Maschstraße. The MTV presented annual gymnastics displays and festivals. It participated in national memorial days.
Around 1862, the club’s composition changed. Craftsmen made up 84% of the members. By 1870, membership dwindled to 200. Between 1908 and 1914, the MTV became a general sports club. Ball sports and track and field divisions were founded. Carl Bernhard Loges began his career with the MTV then. In November 1913, the club leased a 20,000 m² site. It was near Georgengarten. A playing field was created for new sports. After women’s suffrage was introduced in the Weimar Republic, the club changed its name. This reflected its new sporting focus.
Tennis courts and a bowling alley were added in the 1970s. Other sports joined. These included table tennis, fistball, dance sports, and badminton. In the 1980s, the volleyball women played in the Bundesliga. In 2006, the women won a German senior championship in fistball. Today, both men and women play in the Niedersachsen league.
Eintracht Hannover was also a significant club. It was officially Sportverein Eintracht von 1898 e.V. Hannover. It hailed from Hanover’s Südstadt. The first football team played in the Gauliga Südhannover-Braunschweig from 1942-1944.
The club was founded on March 5, 1898. Fifteen youths founded it as FC Eintracht Hannover. Rugby and track and field were the focus in the early years. Football was introduced in 1901. Eintracht split. Only seven football players remained. A merger with Hannover 96 was considered. In 1909, Eintracht won its first city championship. It lost to Eintracht Braunschweig in the first round of the North German Championship. In 1912, Eintracht won the title again. It again faced Braunschweig in the North German Championship.
In 1919, Eintracht qualified for the North German final round again. It merged with Turnerbund Hannover and MTV 1848 Hannover to form VfL Hannover. The footballers appeared as the Eintracht sports department. The footballers felt marginalized. FC Eintracht Hannover was re-established on January 21, 1921. It changed its name to SV Eintracht Hannover that same year.
In 1921, Eintracht reached the quarter-finals of the North German Championship. It lost to Hamburger SV. During the 1920s, Eintracht was overtaken by rivals. These rivals were 96 and SV Arminia. The club was relegated to the second division.
In 2013, VfL Hannover and Sportverein Eintracht von 1898 e.V. Hannover merged to form VfL Eintracht Hannover von 1848. VfL’s sports facilities were abandoned. Eintracht’s facilities in Südstadt became the center. This fusion created a stronger and more diverse sports club for Hanover. It combined tradition with new opportunities. VfL Eintracht Hannover continues to foster sports. It promotes community engagement in Hanover.
