Who’s a good boy? Here at the Utah State Capitol grounds, at the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial Plaza, stands a bronze Dog statue. This isn’t just any dog, though. It’s a tribute to the unwavering loyalty and bravery of police K-9 officers. Dedicated in 2008, the Dog statue is part of a trio of monuments honoring Utah’s law enforcement divisions. The Dog statue depicts a female K9 officer and her dog, forever on alert, ready to spring into action. The sculptor, Lena Toritch, a renowned dog sculptor, won a national competition to create this piece. The Dog statue holds a special distinction. It’s the first ever statue to depict a female police K9 officer. Toritch’s attention to detail is remarkable. She meticulously researched police badges, weapons, and other equipment to ensure accuracy. She even went on ride-alongs with K9 units to capture the dogs’ physique and personality. She saw firsthand how these dogs could switch from playful companions to serious officers in an instant. Toritch has said that creating a K9 officer police statue was a dream come true for her. The Dog statue stands as a powerful reminder of the vital role K9 officers play in law enforcement. They are partners, protectors, and heroes, deserving of our respect and admiration.
