“Shooter” or “rifleman” what does it mean? Schuetzen is a derivative of the German word Schütze. Today, we are standing in front of Schuetzen Park. It is a privately owned park in North Bergen, New Jersey. Schuetzen Park has been around since 1872.
Let’s dive into the history of this unique place. In 1864, Union Hill became separate from North Bergen. German-Americans had originally settled it as early as 1851. In 1872, the United Schützen Association opened a park. It was on the site of the Old Mansion of the Wright family. The park included a dancing pavilion and a music stand. There was also a shooting gallery. Landscape elements and greenhouses remained as Mr. Wright had left them.
The Plattduetsche Volksfest Vereen organization bought the property in 1894. This organization was created in 1874. The park expanded into an amusement park. It featured three dancing pavilions and ten bowling alleys. Up to 50,000 people could be entertained at a time. Vaudeville performances and tournaments took place here. Parades and fireworks also entertained the crowds.
Schuetzen Park originally covered about 32 acres. Its location on the Hudson Palisades was carefully chosen. Bullets could be directed safely into the side of the hill. Target practice continued at Schuetzen Park until 1935. Over the years, much of the property was sold off. A large portion was acquired by the government. This land was used to build Route 495. Route 495 leads to the Lincoln Tunnel.
In 1911, Fred Hager called it Schützen Park in an advertisement. He claimed it was the largest park of its kind in New Jersey. It offered 600 x 200 feet rifle ranges. There were also 10 modern bowling alleys. The three dancing pavilions could accommodate roughly 50,000 people. Schuetzen Park also featured vaudeville performances. Parades, fireworks and tournaments were common attractions. The park catered to the large German-speaking population. Armbruster’s Schuetzen Park was among many others. From 1945 to 1975, Schuetzen Park was home to Hoboken FC 1912.
Today, Schuetzen Park is used for various events. These include banquets and weddings. Receptions and public sporting events are also held here. You might even catch a boxing or mixed martial arts match. Schuetzen Park adds to the green open spaces in North Hudson County.
The German-American Volksfest has taken place here annually since 1874. There were fears that the 2015 Volkfest might be the last. This was due to club members moving away.
The Boulevard proudly stands on the site of Schuetzen Park. It was home to decades of parties. Weddings, concerts, and festivals also took place here. This venue has a long and rich history. Generations of families gathered and celebrated here. It’s an honor to continue that tradition.
